Montana Events: Permits, Staff Costs and Helena Venues

This is where Anchor Guide started. Montana's alcohol rules for events, what bartenders and event staff earn in the state's five metro areas, and an independent list of Helena venues. Each figure links to the agency or dataset it came from.

Quick answer

Nonprofits selling beer and wine at a Montana event need a state special permit at $10 per day. Bar staff cost less here than nationally: the labor for one bartender over 4 hours comes to about $61–$70 at the median, from Billings to Bozeman.

Montana rules

What the law asks of hosts.

Selling drinks at an event

A nonprofit that sells beer and table wine at a fundraiser, fair, rodeo or race applies to the Department of Revenue for a special permit: $10 per day, up to 12 a year, with a signature from local law enforcement. Only fraternal organizations can get a permit that includes liquor. Private parties where nobody pays for a drink are not what the permit is for. Full permit guide.

Bartender training

Licensed businesses must make sure staff who sell or serve alcohol, and their supervisors, finish responsible alcohol sales and service training within 60 days of hire and every 3 years after. Ask any caterer or bar service you hire whether its team is current.

Liability

Under MCA 27-1-710, whoever furnishes alcohol, whether a host or a bar, can be held liable for a guest's actions only in narrow cases: serving someone underage, serving someone visibly intoxicated, or forcing or tricking someone into drinking.
