Bartender wage cost (BLS median, labor only)

A floor, not a quote: tips, minimum booking hours, travel and supplies are extra.
How it works
The math, in the open.
The tool takes the median hourly wage BLS reports for bartenders in the metro you choose, multiplies by the event length and the number of bartenders, and adds a 35% markup for what an agency adds on top of pay. It is labor only. Real bar-service quotes usually add minimum hours, travel and supplies.
| Step | Formula |
|---|---|
| Bartenders | guests ÷ 75, rounded up |
| Wage cost | bartenders × metro median hourly wage × hours × 1.35 |
| 1.35 | agency markup for payroll taxes, insurance and overhead |
| Wage source | BLS OEWS, May 2025, SOC 35-3011 |
Example: 120 guests for 4 hours at a $20.00 median wage: 2 bartenders × $20 × 4 × 1.35 = $216.
FAQ
Questions people ask.
How many bartenders do I need?
One per 75 guests, rounded up: 2 for 120 guests and 4 for 300. Add one if you are serving a cocktail menu.
Why is this lower than quotes I get?
The result is the wage cost of the bartenders. Bar services also charge minimum hours, travel, setup and supplies, and guests usually tip. Treat the number as a floor.
Where do the wages come from?
From the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey. See our methodology.
