How it works

The math, in the open.

A standard 750 ml bottle holds 25.4 fluid ounces, enough for six 4-ounce toast pours with a splash left. If you pour fuller glasses of 5 ounces, plan for five per bottle.

StepFormula
Flutesguests × % taking a glass, rounded up
Bottlesflutes ÷ 6, rounded up
Pour4 oz per flute; a 750 ml bottle holds 25.4 oz

Example: 120 guests, everyone toasting: 120 flutes ÷ 6 = 20 bottles.

Ways to save

Smaller pours, fewer bottles.

Not everyone takes a glass. Pre-pouring for every seat wastes the bottles of guests who do not drink and leaves full flutes on tables. Many couples pour for about three in four guests and let the rest toast with what they already hold.

Pour 4 ounces, not 5. A toast is a few sips. The smaller pour saves a sixth of the order.

Sparkling wine is champagne's cheaper cousin. Only wine from the Champagne region of France carries the name, but cava, prosecco and American sparkling wines pour the same way.

Count it apart from the bar. The alcohol calculator covers the reception; add the toast bottles on top, and chill them with extra ice.
